Christ Church of the Ascension
Sunday Morning Opportunities Our trained, nurturing caregivers are available to care for your children from ages six weeks through three years old on Sundays from 8:45 am through 11:30 am, in order that you may attend Adult Education Classes and the 10:15 am service. The Stork Club (infants) and Toddler’s Place (toddlers ages 1-3) are located across the breezeway from the Church Offices. New pagers are available for parents to take with them during the service, so that they may be contacted at any time, should a need arise. Please fill out a new registration form if you have not done so within the past three months. Your updated contact information is vital to our quality of care for your precious little ones.
Preschool (age 4) - Grade 5 Registration forms are available in the Church office. Sunday School begins at 9 am and is held in the Creation Room, located downstairs in the Education Wing. Children need to be signed in and out of the classroom. Our children encounter stories from the Old and New Testaments, and have an opportunity to respond to God's Word in a variety of ways . . . games, drama, art, music and more! They learn that they are created by God, that God knows and cares for them, that He answers their prayers, and that God is wise and good, holy and perfect, powerful, merciful, and true. Following the Education hour, children attend the Children's Chapel service at 10:15 am (described below), and will return to their families in church at the sign of the Peace. Please do not send children with toys, food or drinks, unless special allergy or medical needs have been prearranged for snacktime.
Children's Chapel We hold a Children's Chapel service for those in Preschool through Fifth Grade. Sunday School students will be brought to the Main Church from the downstairs classroom by their teachers, shortly after 10 am, and sit together in the side Chapel (left-hand side of the Church) during the first part of the service. Alternatively, parents may bring their children to the side Chapel between 10 and 10:15 am, and are more than welcome to sit with us if they so desire. Children are taught how to participate in the service: how to bow when the cross passes by, how to make the sign of the Cross and why we do it, and also learn the meanings of the various symbols in the Church. More importantly, they learn why they are doing what they are doing in Church. We leave the Main Church and walk together to Ascension Chapel (located on the north side of the property, along Lincoln Drive) following the reading of the Gospel. Older toddlers from the Toddler's Room join us at this time. Our time together in Ascension Chapel is a modified Children’s service, focusing on learning the different parts of the Liturgy of the Word, and presenting the themes from the Lectionary at an age-appropriate level. We also sing songs and take time to do basic acolyte training. Most importantly, the children learn to pray, to turn to God for everything, and that He cares for them in every aspect of their lives. Parental assistance for monitoring behavior is always welcome and appreciated, as is good preparation for proper decorum in a church setting. Children join their families in church at the sign of the Peace.
Holy Baptism Christ Church of the Ascension has a long-standing and wonderful tradition of taking Baptism very seriously. Parents of infants and children through Grade 6 who wish their child to be baptized are required to attend a preparation class, scheduled with one of the Priests or the Director of Christian Education. The next Baptism date is March 23, 2008, and the next one following that is May 11, 2008, Pentecost Sunday. If you are interested in this sacrament, please contact Cindy Engle at 602 840 8210, ext. 112 at least two weeks in advance of the desired date, in order that the Church Office may complete administrative preparations and Baptismal banners in a timely manner. .
