A Short Word on Lent at Christ Church

February 2008

I write this note on the Thursday following Ash Wednesday, therefore Lent has
officially begun. Yesterday’s services were remarkably well-attended and a
real
testament to the deep desire which our people have to connect with God
during
this most holy season. There are several things going on that I want to
highlight for you this month.

First, you may have noticed that we have some great Christian Education
programs offered during Lent. On Sundays, check out David Stevens’ class on
Lenten Disciplines or one of our ongoing children and youth programs under
the
leadership of Cindy Engle and Mike Roesler. On Wednesdays during Lent,
Don
Muilenberg is teaching his class on Spiritual Gifts, Sallie and Paul Hansen are
teaching Crown Financial Ministries, and I am doing a class on marriage
enrichment. Mary Uber is cooking the meals, but you have to go to a class and
not just enjoy the dinner! I strongly urge everyone in the parish to get
involved in one or more of these classes.

Second, I want to let you know a bit about the new Vestry structure. Charlie
Moody, our Senior Warden, and I have created three new Vestry Committees.
The
Administration and Finance Committee will be chaired by Clancy DeLong; the
Property Committee will be headed by our Junior Warden, Wally Noll; and the
Mission and Ministry Committee will be chaired by John Harlan. I am excited
about this new organization of the talented members of our Vestry, as it will
place real and meaningful decision-making with our Vestry as well as serve as a
training-ground for parish leadership.

Have a blessed and Holy Lent, and may our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
continue
to be with us here at Christ Church of the Ascension.
